Newberry Graduate Scholar-in-Residence Program

Please see below for information about another Newberry opportunity that might come with travel funding!  Please contact Dr. Ferrell if you are interested.

The Newberry Graduate Scholar-in-Residence program encourages PhD candidates in the humanities to conduct research in our collection and to join our community of scholars for a full academic year. We invite graduate students with advanced to PhD candidacy to apply for this status, with preference given to those whose dissertation projects are well advanced. Graduate Scholars-in-Residence at the Newberry are expected to be “in residence” at the Newberry at least 10 hours per week from September to May, which will enable them to make good use of the collection and participate in the Newberry’s intellectual community.

If you know any graduate students who have advanced to PhD Candidacy and who would benefit from the Newberry’s collections during the 2014-2015 academic year, please pass along the following link, which includes information about the Graduate Scholar-in-Residence application process and the link to the web application:

The applications for the 2014-2015 academic year are due on May 1, 2014 by 11:59 PM.

Starting this year, we have implemented a new web application. We encourage you to take a look at the form now and let us know if you have any questions about how to use it. If you require help filling out the web application, we will be holding another “How-To” workshop on Friday, April 25th at 10:30 AM. If you plan to attend this help session, we ask that you bring your completed application materials, as well as your laptop (if you have one) so that you can follow along. If you do not have a laptop, there will be time afterwards to use our computer.

We expect to notify applicants about their acceptance in June 2014. New Scholars-in-Residence and Graduate Scholars-in-Residence alike are expected to begin their residencies on September 2, 2014, so that they can join the new Long-Term Fellows in Fall Orientation activities.

If you have any questions about the application, residency requirements, help session, or anything else relating to the Graduate and Scholar-in-Residence Programs, please do not hesitate to ask!
